Schoenberg, Stravinsky, and Shostakovich each engaged with different genres—cabaret songs, ragtime, and jazz, respectively—it is not uncommon for composers to incorporate light music into their careers. While some composers, such as Gershwin and Piazzolla, elevated these genres purely into art music, listening to the works of the aforementioned three reveals a subtle sense of distance in each. It could be said that the hedonistic aspects are uniformly suppressed.
These light music genres, whose origins are not necessarily academic, emerged semi-spontaneously, passing through the hands of people over time, and like a mirror reflecting their era, they reflect the image of those who seek to engage with them. People, surrendering to the fervor of pleasure, drink it down with wine and beer, and obscure it with cigarette smoke. They pass the time enjoying it as background music.
