The word "Passepied" itself means "light step," so heaviness is to be avoided. The tempo should be set moderately fast and light. To achieve lightness, articulation can be manipulated.
The eighth notes appearing here should generally be played staccato. "Generally" means there are exceptions, such as when they also function as a dotted quarter note, as in the first beat of measure 12, or when they are tied, as in the third beat of measure 12.
As in the second beat of measure 7, the soprano has sixteenth notes, which should be connected legato up to the D in the third beat, but the alto in the second beat is an eighth note, so it should be played staccato. This is difficult, but practicing at a very slow tempo will yield good results.
Furthermore, for notes at the end of a phrase, such as the alto in the first beat of measure 20, extending them for their full eighth-note duration as usual can convey the sense of a phrase ending. By playing the left hand staccato and the soprano legato, the independence of the three voices can be clearly distinguished, thereby preserving the polyphonic order.
