This Air drastically changes depending on the tempo and articulation. While Airs themselves have a history of being written for instrumental or vocal performance, it seems this particular Air possesses more instrumental characteristics than vocal ones. While it is possible to perform this Air quickly, sharply, and energetically, another possibility is to play it softly, smoothly, and gently, without an excessively fast tempo, much like a violin or a woodwind instrument such as a flute. Considering the sixteenth notes in measures 28 and 31, I feel this Air should not be played at an excessively fast tempo. A tempo of approximately half note = 60-70 seems appropriate. If this Air were a depiction of instrumental music, for instance, when performing the leaping notes written in the treble clef in measures 25-27, it seems prudent to set a tempo that does not strain the performance itself. Please consider it a depiction of beauty and gentleness, rather than one of grandeur or technical virtuosity.
