Composed between 1774 and 1776, it consists of three movements.
The first movement, in E major, is marked Moderato in 4/4 time. The opening four measures are written polyphonically. In the development section (from m. 25), the first theme is primarily treated. In the recapitulation (from m. 42), the passage differs from the exposition by shifting registers within a single phrase.
The second movement is an Allegretto in 3/4 time, in E minor, the parallel minor of the first movement. At the end of this movement, a double bar line is used instead of a final bar line, but no attacca indication is present.
The third movement, the Finale, is a Presto in 2/4 time, also in E major, like the first movement. It is written in rondo form. The right-hand theme begins on the dominant and descends towards the dominant an octave lower. In contrast, the secondary theme, which is first introduced following this, features alternating ascending and descending figures, each lasting one measure.
