Jō Kondō (b. 1947) began to distinguish himself as a promising composer while still enrolled at Tokyo University of the Arts. After graduating from university, in 1973, he began composing using his unique methodology, which he calls "Line Music." Since then, with his refined and unique ideas and music, he has consistently remained at the forefront of the global music scene. Click-Clack, commissioned and premiered by composer Yuji Takahashi, is one of the earliest works of "Line Music" and also Kondō's first piano solo piece. This work, derived precisely from the "Line Music" way of thinking, aims to "derive the entire structure of the piece from a single melodic line." Here, furthermore, the melody derived from a single line is colored by subtle harmonies of overtones, sometimes by pressing piano keys silently. The act of "attentive listening" involves tuning one's ear to the faint resonance of the strings and surrendering oneself to the simple flow of sounds. It can be said that the essence of Kondō's works, which "Line Music" aims for, lies precisely in the mechanism that encourages this "attentive listening."
