Masaru Sato (1938-), who has continuously attracted significant attention, particularly in the field of choral works, since his time at Tokyo University of the Arts. Through the rich musicality and highly persuasive musical language evident in works such as his representative piece "Daichi Sansho" (Ode to the Earth) (1962), he has created numerous works that have been loved for a long time. His outstanding compositional technique has also been applied to his preferred piano music, resulting in a large number of works for piano, ranging from concertos to short pieces for children. "Improvisation No. 2" is a work born in 1970, during the nascent era of postmodernism, as he pursued his own musical language more deeply. Compared to "Improvisation No. 1," composed in 1959, it is bolder and offers greater freedom. After its premiere by Haruna Hirao on NHK-FM's "Gendai no Ongaku" (Contemporary Music), it was premiered in its revised form by Kaori Kimura in 2004. The impressive high-pitched sounds at the beginning resonate again in the concluding section, after passing through a freely transforming middle section. Even within its innovative and sharp musical character, which effectively utilizes the piano's lowest and highest registers, a warm musicality that is always mindful of both the listener and the performer can be felt.
