Dedicated to Princess Josephine von Liechtenstein. It was titled "Sonata quasi una Fantasia" by Beethoven himself. Another significant characteristic of this sonata is that its movements are connected attacca. Following Sonata No. 12, it does not contain a movement in sonata form.
First Movement
The first movement is in E-flat major and is in ternary form. In the middle section, it modulates to C major, and the tempo shifts from a leisurely Andante to a lively Allegro, with the time signature also changing from 2/2 to 6/8, displaying varied motion.
Second Movement
The second movement, Allegro molto e vivace, is in C minor and 3/4 time, and like the preceding movement, it is in ternary form. This movement possesses a scherzo-like character, and in its middle section, it modulates to A-flat major, the submediant of the tonic. This modulation to a key outside of closely related keys, along with the attacca connection of the entire sonata, reflects Beethoven's anticipation of Romantic tendencies.
Third Movement
The third movement begins with an Adagio con espressione (in A-flat major, 3/4 time) in ternary form, which serves as an introduction, followed by an Allegro vivace in rondo-sonata form (in E-flat major, 2/4 time). The former Adagio is 25 measures long, but it modulates to the dominant in its middle section and can be regarded as an independent movement. Subsequently, in the coda of the following Allegro vivace in rondo-sonata form, the main theme of the Adagio is recalled.
