“Samba Canción” was composed in 1992 as a piano solo work and was subsequently arranged by the composer himself for piano duet and for clarinet and piano. It is included in the posthumous collection (Kawai Publishing) of Takekuni Hirayoshi, who passed away on May 28, 1998, at the age of 61, alongside “Habanera” and “First Love”.
The title “Samba Canción” is Spanish, with “Canción” meaning “song.” A fluid and melancholic main melody appears throughout the piece. In the form of a South American Argentine folk song, the piano solo version is written with the right hand in 6/8 time and the left hand in 3/4 time, and this contrast brings a unique resonance to the piece. Furthermore, although “Habanera” (1995) and this work were composed in reverse chronological order, according to the composer's intention, when performing the two pieces consecutively, they should be played in the order of “Habanera” followed by “Samba Canción”.
