13. Allegro non troppo
This is a grand prelude, reminiscent of a colossal edifice. Exert the utmost forte as if playing both the solo and orchestral parts of a piano concerto by yourself. However, this piece can become utterly incomprehensible if one misinterprets it (meaning, if the performance method is incorrect).
Let's summarize the key points.
The musical material can be broadly divided into three types:
- Material A: Sections that progress with chromatic motion, lacking a distinct melodic line.
- Material B: Sections with a single melodic line within a grand accompaniment.
- Material C: Sections where the right and left hands are two octaves apart, playing the same notes, with a clearly discernible melody.
Let's begin from the opening. The opening is Material A (bars 1-7). Within this section, a chromatic progression appears in the inner voice: C-sharp, C, B, A-sharp, A, A-sharp, B, B-sharp, C-sharp. Play this so that it is heard most clearly.
From bar 7, Material B (bars 7-16) appears. Play so that the top note of the chord is clearly heard. The melody is indicated on the score with dotted lines, showing which notes to connect.
From bar 17, Material C (bars 17-28) appears. While there is no particular need to bring out the melody in this section, adhere to general shaping, such as changing the color in places like bar 21, and recognizing bar 23 as a peak point.
The piece returns to Material A from bar 29. Apply a crescendo in bars 27 and 28, entering bar 29 smoothly.
Bar 43 is the grandest point of this piece. Play grandioso and never rush.
Bar 54 is a section that becomes even grander. Even in such sections, do not forget the chromatic progression and prioritize this voice.
Regarding the tempo of this piece, one can only say "not too slow, not too fast." I have listened to performances by several children, and I found all of them to be too slow. If it is too slow, the piece can become drawn out. The tempo marking is Allegro non troppo. While not rushing, the basic tempo is allegro. Please be very careful not to play too slowly.
