A fierce work with strong rhythmic elements. The tense chromatic descending figures, repeated dissonances, and abruptly struck chords at the beginning suggest the presence of a dangerous, “outcast” gaucho. After the melody and rhythm of the local dance music gato are employed, the bitonality introduced in the first piece briefly reappears. Subsequently, the piece concludes grandly with chord combinations characteristic of the malambo (I-IV-V) and intense rhythms. Through this festive depiction of the gaucho, Ginastera may have sought to restore freedom and pride to this figure, rather than branding him as an outlaw.
