This movement should be conceived as being performed on a pipe organ.
Character of the Piece
It is an expression of sadness. While it progresses in an inoffensive and subdued manner, it also contains elements of poignancy and tenderness.
Flow of the Piece
The piece gradually increases in density towards its conclusion, ending in forte. In other words, it should possess tension and direction from the outset, starting from pp and reaching the peak point without releasing the tension. Please consider measure 171 as the peak point. During this process, of course, a continuous crescendo is not intended; there will be moments of returning to p or reaching f. However, when considering the overall structure, the tension is conceived as gradually increasing.
Articulation
Therefore, the four identical notes seen in the theme (e.g., measures 2, beats 1-2, EEEE) do not particularly need to be staccato. Connect the repeated notes smoothly. By playing these repeated notes legato, a more solemn atmosphere can be achieved.
Timbre
Emulate a pipe organ. For instance, where the soprano presents the theme in measure 142, it should be played with a hard, large volume, like a sharp pipe. The timbre should be varied each time the theme appears. Numerous stretti appear; please vary the timbre and volume each time.
