This piece is said to depict the call of a cuckoo; if so, please consider that there are four birds with different calls. Please consider it as fundamentally a four-voice texture.
- Soprano: Measures 185-190, sings the theme.
- Alto: Measures 191-197, sings the theme.
- Tenor: Measures 198-204, sings the theme.
- Bass: Measures 211-216, sings the theme.
Fundamentally, it is a bright and joyful fugue. Feel it in 2/4 time, and never play it at a slow tempo.
In this fugue, the theme has a stronger element of "interest in repetition" rather than being a song, so meticulous line shaping is not particularly necessary. Rather, what is desired is a different timbre (vocal quality) for each voice part. Therefore, it is more desirable to devise ways to make the voice parts independent, such as one voice being soft, another brilliant, another subdued, and another sharp.
