This work was composed around the period when the composer, after studying in Germany, successively brought formal and structural compositional techniques to fruition in his works. Other compositions from the same period include Symphony No. 1, Symphony No. 2, and String Sextet. It is a large-scale sonata characterized by its chromatic basis.
First Movement
A movement imbued with intensity and brilliance. Three themes of differing character (Adagio energico, Allegro ma non troppo, Adagio tranquillo) unfold, appearing alternately.
Second Movement
A rapid and lively Scherzo movement (Presto appassionato).
Third Movement
A movement that combines tranquility and a sense of urgency (Andante sostenuto). The opening section of the first movement is recapitulated at the end, concluding brilliantly.
