Kōsaku Yamada, upon returning from his studies in Berlin, founded the orchestral department of the Tokyo Philharmonic Society, which, however, disbanded in February 1916. Around that time, Yamada began composing numerous piano works to expand his scope of activity, premiering them at concerts he organized titled “Yamada-Abend.” These activities strengthened Yamada's social recognition as a pioneer of Western music in Japan.
“Yoru no Uta” ni Yosete (To “Night Song”) was composed on December 3, 1916, precisely during the period when Yamada was actively producing many piano pieces. The title is not by the composer himself but is based on the new complete edition published by Shunjusha. The title given by the composer Kōsaku Yamada is “Petit poème à la ‘Nachtlied’.” There are no records of its premiere or any dedication. It is a small-scale work, comprising 20 measures. Characteristic of his piano works, this piece does not extensively employ piano virtuosity. Although its main key is A major, it is harmonically rich in color due to frequent modulations.
