Composed around the same time as the Romances, Op. 21, this piece was written as the fourth Romance for her blind friend, Rosalie Leser. It remains unknown why this particular piece was not grouped with the other Romances and assigned an opus number. Approximately 100 years after the other three pieces, it was finally published for the first time by G. Henle Verlag in 1986.
This Romance possesses a translucent beauty, yet it also carries a hint of sadness. In the A major middle section, where the left-hand triplets move chromatically, the way it occasionally reveals a shadow amidst its brightness is characteristic of Clara.
