This piece is characterized by its striking left-hand ostinato. The left hand continues quietly and stealthily, like footsteps approaching winter. This piece is in 5/4 time. Barcarolles are typically in 6/8 time; if the two eighth notes on the fourth beat of the left hand in this piece were quarter notes, it would become 6/8 time. Trying to play it in 6/8 time will likely help you clearly perceive the difference from 5/4 time. The "returning" part of the "back-and-forth" swaying motion is curtailed. The right hand creates a long 8-measure phrase with sustained notes. Play it expressively, as if singing, maintaining a continuous flow of sound. At measure 19, the music ascends to its first peak and is sung loftily; however, since the second peak at measure 27 (marked f) is still to come, be careful not to overexert yourself prematurely. Play with foresight, allowing the overall sense of exaltation in the piece to build naturally and effortlessly.
