Composed between 1830 and 1841, and published in 1841, this work is dedicated to Miss Friederike Müller. Although conceived as a Third Piano Concerto for two pianos or solo piano, it is believed to have been revised and completed as a piano solo work in later years. Perhaps reflecting this, its form closely resembles the first movement of a piano concerto. Furthermore, the influence of Liszt, whom Chopin met around this time, is clearly discernible in its style, alongside techniques that foreshadow later works such as the Fantaisie-Polonaise.
Written in A major and 4/4 time with an Allegro maestoso tempo, this work begins with a substantial 40-bar introduction and can be understood as being in a free sonata form. The first theme of the exposition, beginning at measure 41, evokes an aria from an Italian opera. This is evident not only in the melody but also in the accompanying parts, with figures and articulations that imitate various orchestral instruments. In contrast, the second theme, starting at measure 91, is reminiscent of Chopin's nocturnes. A cadenza is inserted between these two themes. In the development section, starting at measure 124, the first theme is primarily treated. And in the recapitulation, from measure 200, only the first theme is developed. Subsequently, from measure 228, a section begins that functions like a second development, leading to a coda characterized by octaves, bringing the piece to a close.
