This is a piano trio composed by Wolf-Ferrari around 1989, when he was approximately twenty years old. Although born in Italy, his father was a painter from Bavaria. During this period, he was studying under Rheinberger at the Munich Academy of Music.
The eclectic elements that would later appear in his works are not yet visible in this piece; instead, the lineage of chamber music by composers such as Schumann and Brahms is faithfully and legitimately inherited. While there are also study-like elements gracefully imitating traditional Romanticism, his unique skill in allowing each instrument to sing impressive melodies is fully demonstrated.
Lighthearted sections and deeply emotional sections coexist harmoniously, and throughout the piece, a drama of brightness and intimacy is displayed, with the opening theme reappearing powerfully towards the end to conclude the work.
