After completing the Faust Symphony, based on Goethe's Faust, Liszt then composed the orchestral works 'Night Procession' and 'Dance in the Village Inn', based on Lenau's Faust. This 'Mephisto Waltz No. 1' is an arrangement of 'Dance in the Village Inn' for solo piano.
Mephisto plays a waltz on the violin, and people dance. Eventually, Mephisto, having found a girl named Margarete, slips away into the forest. In the night sky, a nightingale sings. This piece, which concretely expresses these narrative elements, simultaneously incorporates abundant virtuoso techniques, making it one of Liszt's representative challenging works. While the middle section is rich in romantic poetic sentiment, the opening and latter parts are far from elegant salon-style waltzes; instead, they are filled with tremendous energy akin to 'frenzied revelry', offering ample enjoyment of magnificent piano technique. Composed in 1860.
