This is a masterpiece that Schumann, renowned as a critic, highly praised, calling it "perfect in form and spirit." Even today, it is recognized as one of Schubert's finest sonatas. The year after its composition, it was published by Haslinger as four separate pieces titled "Fantasia, Andante, Menuetto, and Allegretto," becoming the last piano sonata published during Schubert's lifetime. It was dedicated to his friend J. Spaun. While the Fantasia movement exhibits a remarkably beautiful finish, the movements utilizing dance rhythms are also captivating, a testament to Schubert's extensive composition of dance pieces.
Movement 1: Molto moderato e cantabile, G major, 12/8 time signature.
A lyrical and contemplative movement. Although in sonata form, a prayer-like song unfolds fantastically, as its title suggests.
Movement 2: Andante, D major, 3/8 time signature.
Composed of a theme suitable for a relaxed Andante and a theme with a sharp, severe atmosphere.
Movement 3: Menuetto. Allegro moderato, B minor, 3/4 time signature.
Consists of a Menuetto section displaying a stomping power and a charming Trio section. It might be closer to a Ländler (a three-beat folk dance) rather than a Menuetto.
Movement 4: Allegretto, G major, 4/4 time signature.
The simple rondo theme is reminiscent of a polka. It is a light and cheerful movement, like a dance.
