Schubert was a composer who wrote a considerable number of dance pieces. In his case, these were often created for actual dancing. Consequently, dance pieces were composed intensively when Schubertiades, gatherings of his friends, were frequently held.
The dance pieces included in this work were composed precisely during such a period, from 1823 to 1824. It is said that Schubert improvised dance pieces, repeatedly played those he liked, wrote them down, and published them. In this way, numerous dance pieces were released during his lifetime, and this particular work was also compiled by Cappi in Vienna as early as the following year.
While the previous year, 1822, saw the creation of a major work, the “Wanderer Fantasy,” this work, in contrast, features private music intended for close friends, appearing with various characters.
