This work is one of a series of ambitious pieces published by Alkan in 1844 (e.g., Le Chevalier, Op. 17; Saltarelle, Op. 23; Gigue et Air de ballet dans le style ancien, Op. 24; Le Chemin de fer, Op. 27) that reveals his religious side. Alkan was a devout Jew. Although in 12/8, be aware that each beat should be subdivided into two, not three, as notated. In passages where the left-hand chords are difficult to grasp, the outline will become clearer if you allow the lowest note to resonate fully before playing the remaining notes more subtly.
