This piece is considered to comprise two distinct musical currents. The work is structured in ABA form, divided into two primary sections: A and B. Section A is conceived as a horizontally flowing segment. Conversely, Section B is regarded as a vertically structured section, rhythmically articulating the beat. Therefore, when performing Section A, the objective is to achieve a smooth, horizontal flow that minimizes the perception of the pulse. However, the perfect fifth chords in the left hand appear exclusively on the first beat, thereby marking the pulse. To mitigate this, they should be executed as softly as possible (pp), perhaps evoking the continuous drone of a bagpipe's bass. The overarching aim is to maintain a horizontal musical progression.
In Section B, the atmosphere undergoes a significant transformation. The initial 9-16 measures should be interpreted as a duo, resembling a conversational interplay between two voices. From measure 17 onwards, the left hand performs repeated notes, executed rhythmically and lightly. Measure 21 or its immediate vicinity should be designated as the peak point of this composition. The count leading back to Section A is of paramount importance, thus requiring precise execution.
