One of Malcolm Williamson's educational works. The 'Travel Diaries' series also includes 'Naples,' 'London,' 'Paris,' and 'New York,' but 'Sydney' was composed specifically for beginners. Nevertheless, as a collection colored by diverse characteristics—such as the first piece, 'North Head,' and the final piece, 'South Head,' which feature harmonies with a weak sense of meter and tonality (these two pieces form a pair, with the final piece being a retrograde of the first); the lyrical fourth piece, 'Botanical Gardens' (Royal Botanic Garden), and the ninth piece, 'Morning Swim'; and the descriptive fifth piece, 'On the Central Railway,' and the sixth piece, 'Harbour Ferry'—it is a work that offers not only mere educational significance but also great enjoyment to both listeners and performers.
