Works written by Bach in B major are not numerous. The B major in Book 1 of the Well-Tempered Clavier, a key known for its gentle, refined, soft, and leisurely flow of pleasant time, shares the same character. It never exhibits a serious aspect.
A characteristic feature of this prelude is the complete absence of breaks in the sixteenth-note figuration. This means there are no discernible cadences, and sixteenth notes are consistently present throughout (similar to the Allemande from the B major Partita). Therefore, it is crucial for the performer to play without interrupting the flow, avoiding a vertical interpretation of the music, and instead allowing it to unfold leisurely and smoothly horizontally.
Regarding the trills written in this prelude, for instance, in the case of trills such as those in the right hand on the fourth beat of measure 1, or in the left hand on the second and fourth beats of measure 2, it sounds smoother to execute them continuously until the final two thirty-second notes. Stopping after three or four notes creates a sense of interruption in the flow.
