Finale in D minor: Molto Allegro con spirito

Written in sonata form, this movement begins with the A note, the final note of the second movement, and incorporates the descending octave figure played by the left hand at the end of the same movement as part of its opening texture, clearly demonstrating an awareness of the connection between the preceding and succeeding movements. The rhythmic first theme in D minor and the expansive, melodic second theme in F major are contrastingly placed, concluding the exposition with a repetition.

Although the development section begins in B-flat minor, it undergoes a dizzying series of modulations throughout. It can generally be divided into four sections, with its musical climax arguably found in the passage of the second theme appearing in the fourth section. However, this does not last long, and after a short, quietly subsiding transition, it leads into the recapitulation.

The recapitulation, similar to the first movement, proceeds almost faithfully to the exposition. In the transition at the end of the first theme, an unexpected pause plays an effective role, and the subsequent progression of the second theme also adheres to that of the exposition. The ensuing coda begins pp but repeatedly crescendos towards the end, culminating in fff with arpeggios of the tonic chord, bringing the music to a brilliant close.
