"Kreisleriana" is a title taken from "Kapellmeister Kreisler," a character appearing in E.T.A. Hoffmann's novel. Schumann, who admired E.T.A. Hoffmann, a writer a generation older than himself, superimposed his own romance with Clara onto this novel, which depicted an unfulfilled love. This work was conceived during a period when Schumann was suffering from opposition to his marriage with Clara. Musical creation became his sole salvation, and many masterpieces for piano were composed during this time.
While the style of compiling short pieces under a single overarching theme was a form Schumann excelled at, "Kreisleriana" is neither a set of variations nor a collection of short pieces. Instead, it is one of the works where the individual expressions of each movement are masterfully unified in a natural progression.
Relatively simple harmonic progressions expand boldly through changes in rhythm and unexpected developments. Though passionate, it is never sentimental, and its literary poeticism is dynamically expressed in sound.
