Performance Notes on the Sonata
This sonata alternates between C major and G major. Although there are signs of modulation to other keys during the development section, it ultimately settles back into G major or C major. The development section builds tension, and changes should be made accordingly; however, a crucial challenge in this sonata lies in 'how to convey joy'.
The overall mood is extremely optimistic, with no hint of seriousness. It can be conceptualized as 'a delightful conversation between two people' or 'listening to someone's enjoyable story'.
Points of Caution and Performance Considerations:
- A significant number of repetitions means the piece tends to become monotonous and insistent; this should be avoided.
- Fundamentally, dynamic control is required. For instance, from the second beat of measure 4 to the first beat of measure 8, the same material is repeated twice, making it crucial to introduce some 'difference'.
- The same applies to measures 13-14. For example, from the second beat of measure 4 to the first beat of measure 8, an echo effect can be applied, starting forte and then piano. However, for measures 13-14, since there is a later goal of reaching the highest note, C, in measure 17, measure 13 might begin piano, and measure 14 would increase in volume to progress forward.
While tempo and articulation are flexible, the premise is to create an exciting sense of joy; therefore, choose a tempo and articulation that the performer themselves finds enjoyable.
