Although sometimes grouped with Op. 71 in some editions, these pieces were not originally composed as a single suite but rather as a collection of seven distinct works. They were composed between 1886 and 1887. At a concert in 1886, Albéniz himself presented only the first four pieces together. The sixth piece, "Rumores de la caleta," is particularly famous.
1. En el mar (Barcarola): A-flat major, 6/8 time, Con moto. It is an Impressionistic piece in A-B-A form. In the A section, notes exhibit wave-like motion atop a swaying, duple-meter-like movement. In the B section (middle part), the number of notes decreases, and a graceful melody is sung in the high register, accompanied by eighth notes. The ripple-like sound created by the tremolo should also be beautifully expressed. Difficulty: Intermediate.
2. Leyenda: E-flat major, 3/4 time, Andantino. Perhaps it relates to a legend passed down in the sea of Cádiz. Feeling the triple meter while perceiving each measure as a single large beat will give the piece significant momentum. The gentle narrative style, like telling an old story to children, dramatically changes in the "Sombrio" middle section. It might be effective to perform while imagining a ship tossed in a raging sea and the drama unfolding within it. Difficulty: Intermediate.
3. Alborada: A major, 3/4 time, Andantino non troppo. The piece progresses while maintaining an overall quiet atmosphere. An Impressionistic piece. It is as if the lingering night mist gradually clears, and the refreshing light of the morning sun begins to shine brightly. It requires a very delicate ear for shaping sounds and listening to reverberations. Meticulous attention to pedal usage is also necessary. Difficulty: Intermediate.
4. En la Alhambra: A minor, 3/4 time, Allegretto non troppo. The mysteriously alluring and sensuous Islamic-style melody is captivating. It originally bore the subtitle "Capricho." Since the musical ideas change narratively, varying and devising expressions according to each image will make it enjoyable. Difficulty: Intermediate.
5. Puerta de Tierra (Bolero): D major, 3/4 time, Allegro non troppo. The title means "Gate of Tierra (Earth)," referring to the gate leading into Cádiz, a port city in southern Spain. As indicated by the subtitle "Bolero," a masculine melody is sung loudly with a soaring voice, carried by the bolero rhythm. To effectively bring out the sense of rhythm, it would be beneficial to be creative with pedal usage. Difficulty: Intermediate to Advanced.
6. Rumores de la caleta (Malagueña): A Phrygian mode, 3/4 and 3/8 time, Allegro. Its distinctly Spanish atmosphere is captivating, making it the most popular piece in the collection. "Malagueña" is a folk song from Málaga, a large port city on Spain's Costa del Sol, and is composed in the "Fandango" form. Aim for rich expression by clearly differentiating between sections played smoothly in one breath and crisp, staccato sections, effectively utilizing accents, and exaggerating dynamic changes. Difficulty: Intermediate.
7. En la playa: A-flat major, 3/4 time, Andantino. A work reminiscent of a Fauré-esque Nocturne. A gentle yet melancholic melody unfolds serenely over a quiet eighth-note accompaniment. While making the melody stand out, one should aim to create an inner timbre. Difficulty: Beginner.
