From the Composer
Regarding "La chimere commune," it was premiered in 2008 at Saint-Bernard Church in Paris, France. This piece was actually conceived as one work within a suite of five pieces for a different instrumentation titled "La famille du requin" (The Shark Family), comprising pieces such as "Great White Shark" and "Whale Shark," and was written as a series about shark-like creatures. "La chimere commune" is a piece themed on the chimaera, a deep-sea shark (though strictly speaking, it is a species somewhat distant from true sharks), and its title is in French. It is a shark with a very peculiar head, and I composed it by combining the transparency of the clarinet and piano in unison with its smooth, gliding swimming motion.

Performance Tips
Maintain a generally relaxed tempo, especially in sections where the piano and clarinet are in complete unison. The composer, Mr. Kawakami, describes these parts as "like treading on thin ice." It is advisable to maintain a quiet tension and proceed cautiously, ensuring the ensemble breathes together. Furthermore, for the clarinet's glissando sections, it is recommended to focus on the smooth, gradual descent of the pitch rather than solely on the target note's exact pitch.
