(Though there are various theories) Conceived in 1832-33, completed in 1835.
Composed of four movements.
Schumann left behind three sonatas and an unfinished sonata (No. 4), but it seems he was never particularly adept at writing sonatas themselves.
At the time, Schumann stated that this sonata lacked vitality, and then wrote that sonata form itself had limitations, and that he should create something freer and newer in the future.
First Movement: Sonata Movement with Introduction, F-sharp minor
A revision of the 1832 work 'Allegro Fandango'. Fandango is a dance rhythm originating from the Andalusia region of Spain. The musical idea of the first theme, accompanied by intense emotion, dominates the entire movement. It has strong Florestan-like elements, symbolizing Schumann's extroverted character.
Second Movement: Aria, A major
Based on the 1827 song 'An Anna (Kerner poem)'.
A movement with strong Eusebius-like elements, symbolizing Schumann's introverted side. Not passionate, but expressive.
Third Movement: Scherzo and Intermezzo, F-sharp minor
An Allegro scherzo. Instead of a trio, an intermezzo marked 'slowly, burlesquely, yet grandly' is inserted.
Fourth Movement: Finale, F-sharp minor
The recurring Florestan-like theme is joined by contrapuntal ideas with Eusebius-like phrases, concluding with a passionate coda. A free rondo movement.
