The original piece is an instrumental ensemble work (for strings, trumpets, timpani, etc.) from the sacred composition Te Deum. Charpentier was a French composer active in the 17th century; however, his Te Deum was published in Vienna only in the 20th century. The Prelude from this work is widely familiar through various arrangements, including organ pieces.
