It depicts the chirping of birds in a grove at dawn. The light and cheerful expression, yet with a sense of weightlessness and a somewhat ephemeral quality, is characteristic of Lysberg. The way the right hand scatters brilliance in the high register, set against the barcarolle-like rhythm of the left hand, likely takes its cue from his teacher Chopin's "Berceuse," Op. 57. Each time the theme is repeated, meticulous variants are applied, such as changes in harmony, presence or absence of arpeggiation, appoggiaturas, and accents. Such characteristics, which make memorization remarkably difficult, are frequently observed in the generation of the 1820s and are considered a major factor in deterring performers.
