These two etudes, written for Clara Schumann, are less an homage than a challenge. They are counted among the most demanding works in piano literature, ancient and modern. The first piece imitates the sound of bells and their echoes, while the second depicts the wild dance of maenads at a Dionysian festival. Musically, they are solid works grounded in tradition, yet the continuous, almost deranged, extreme movements far exceed the boundaries of conventional pianism. Dreyschock can be cited as a type similar to Willmers, but experiencing such works makes one realize anew how functional and reasonable the pianism of Liszt and Alkan truly is.
