This is Henselt's arrangement of his own piano solo piece, Romance (Op. 10) for two pianos. The original work is a relatively simple and playable short piece for Henselt, possessing a melancholic character. The second piano part enhances the rich, nuanced emotion while preserving the delicacy of the original. It is marked Lento, 6/8 time, in B-flat minor. Although this work is an independent piece, Henselt himself explicitly stated in the score that he used it as a prelude (Vorspiel) to If I Were a Bird (Op. 2-6) (Op. 2-6 is known as the "Bird Etude" or "Vöglein-Etüde"). For continuous performance, a short cadenza serving as a bridge is optionally added at the end. This performance configuration is sometimes referred to as "Romance and Etude" (Op. 10a). It is worth re-examining this work as an appealing performance option that leaves a favorable impression on the listener.
