The tonic key is B major, and the form is ternary.
- A (measures 1-8)
- B (measures 9-16)
- A (measures 17-24)
The gentle opening, reminiscent of the work's title, is constructed with harmonic changes every two measures, resulting in a slow harmonic rhythm. From measure 5, the harmony changes by quarter note through a sequence, leading to a double dominant (diminished seventh chord) of the secondary dominant in measure 7, progressing to the dominant and concluding in measure 8.
Section B modulates to the dominant key of F-sharp major. Its overall structure resembles that of A. From measure 15, it briefly modulates to B minor, ending with a half cadence on the dominant chord.
The recapitulation of the theme begins in measure 17, identical to the opening A section.
