In D-flat major, structured as theme and variations.
Theme:
- A [a (measures 1-4) + a1 (measures 5-8)]
- B [b (measures 9-12) + a1 (measures 13-16)]
Variation:
- A1 [a (measures 17-20) + a1 (measures 21-24)]
- B1 [b (measures 25-28) + a1 (measures 29-32)]
Coda:
- [measures 33-41]
The theme is characterized by simple yet beautiful harmonic progressions, including deceptive cadences, which lend it a somewhat sentimental impression. As indicated by "Con espressione" (with expression), one should feel and express the subtle changes in the harmonic progression.
The variation begins at measure 17. It is a variation in eighth notes, somewhat lively, but as indicated by "mezzo forte," it does not have an overly powerful atmosphere; overall, it unfolds gently.
The coda develops a part of the theme. Chords are expressed through arpeggios, expanding their range.
