Saint-Saëns's collection of piano arrangements based on J.S. Bach's works was published by Durand, with Volume 1 in 1862 and Volume 2 in 1873. All 12 pieces are drawn from cantatas and unaccompanied violin sonatas, revealing a French perspective on Bach that is distinctly different from that of German composers. It is characterized by expansive lyricism and functional pianism, rather than strictness and piety. Volume 2 is dedicated to Madame Wilhelmine Salvady (Kraus) (1834-1909), a gifted pupil of Clara Schumann. (Kanazawa, Osamu)
