I aimed to re-express the charm of folk songs from Ibaraki Prefecture by quoting them in a piano piece in paraphrase form.
"Iso-bushi" has been sung and passed down by fishermen in Shukumachi, Oarai Town, and Nakaminato. "Joban Tanko-bushi" is sung by people working in the Joban Coalfield and has been transmitted from southern Fukushima Prefecture to northern Ibaraki Prefecture. Furthermore, "Ami-no-shi Uta" was sung in fishing ports such as Hiraiso and Nakaminato during the era of oar-powered fishing boats and is said to be a folk song of daily life born from maritime living.
Going beyond Western functional harmony and employing chromatic techniques, among others, I devised the piece to highlight the three folk songs, each with a distinct character.
