A monumental work that can be considered a masterpiece in the history of piano music. A sister work, "33 Variations on a Theme by Beethoven," Op. 130 (based on the theme of the "32 Variations"), was written during his stay in Switzerland, but this work, based on the second theme of the "Sonata Appassionata," is a grand piece exceeding 30 minutes. Rivaling the original composer's variations, it unfolds with eloquent and diverse developments, with Beethoven's symphonies and string quartets appearing one after another. In most of the pieces, motifs from works by Mozart, Schumann, and Chopin are interwoven with astonishing ingenuity, in addition to Beethoven's (referenced works are indicated in [ ] where identifiable). Dedicated to Delaborde (1839-1913), a professor of piano at the Paris Conservatoire, who was an illegitimate son of Ch.-V. Alkan and an outstanding pianist and composer.
