Composed between 1914 and 1918, this is an important work among Bartók's folk song arrangements. Although each piece is very short, they are lively works that convey the vitality of Hungarian peasants.
Originally arranged for solo piano, several pieces from No. 6 to No. 15 were later arranged by the composer himself for orchestra and published in 1933 under the title Hungarian Peasant Songs.
This is a cycle of pieces divided into the following four parts. Across the four parts, it forms a multi-movement structure: an opening piece, a scherzo, a slow movement, and a finale. It is often performed in excerpts at concerts.
Structure
- Nos. 1-4: Four Old Sad Songs
- No. 4: Scherzo
- No. 6: Ballad (Theme and Variations)
- Nos. 7-15: Old Dance Tunes
