Born in Tokyo in 1944.
1966 Graduated from the Composition Department of Tokyo University of the Arts. While enrolled, he studied composition under Tomojiro Ikenouchi, Akio Yashiro, and Akira Miyoshi, and piano under Kazuko Yasukawa. In September of the same year, he went to France as a French government scholarship student and graduated from the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris in 1970. During this period, he studied under Maurice Duruflé, Marcel Bitsch, Jean-Claude Henry, and Henri Dutilleux.
After returning to Japan, in addition to his compositional activities, he was active as a pianist in fields such as chamber music and lieder accompaniment.
1981 He received the 30th Otaka Prize for “Image” for Orchestra, and in 2001, the Bekku Prize for “Fantasia” for Organ and Orchestra.
Currently, he is Professor Emeritus at Tokyo University of the Arts, Specially Appointed Professor at Toho Gakuen School of Music, and a member of the Japan Society for Contemporary Music.
