Born in Asahikawa City, Hokkaido. He studied under Tomojiro Ikenouchi at Tokyo University of the Arts. Subsequently, he moved to France in 1954 and studied under Olivier Messiaen, André Jolivet, and others at the Conservatoire de Paris. He graduated in 1957 and returned to Japan around 1961. After returning to Japan, he was active in the music world for many years as one of Japan's leading composers. Furthermore, from 1981, he was involved in nurturing younger generations at the Faculty of Music and the Department of Music of the Junior College at Senzoku Gakuen College of Music, serving as Dean of the Faculty of Music and Head of the Department of Music of the Junior College at the same university from 1995 to 1999. In 1965, he received the Arts Festival Encouragement Prize for his Piano Concerto No. 1. Among his piano solo works, Toccata (1966) and Suite for Keyboard (1968) are relatively frequently performed.
