He studied under Yuri Shaporin at the Moscow Conservatory. He gained recognition as a composer, notably for his Symphony No. 1 and other works. From his conservatory days to his early career, he was active during the peak of the Stalinist regime and was influenced by the so-called "socialist realism" doctrine. He served as chairman of the Union of Soviet Composers and was known as a pro-Soviet establishment figure. In his compositions, he also explored "Soviet contemporary music," incorporating techniques such as serialism and aleatoric methods. Many of his works possess modern popularity, including piano pieces that incorporate jazz elements.
