Born to a father who served as a court musician and violinist in Versailles, he learned the violin from his father and the piano from his elder brother. During this period, he belonged to a boys' choir in Versailles under the reign of Louis XVI. Subsequently, in 1791, he became the principal harpsichordist at the opera house 'Théâtre de Monsieur'. In 1792, amidst the French Revolution in Paris, he joined the orchestra of the National Guard led by Lafayette. From 1802, he became a piano teacher at the Paris Conservatoire, and also served as a conductor at the Théâtre Molière. He was known as a virtuoso violinist and a pianist in the field of chamber music during his time. As a composer, he produced many operatic works.
