Chabrier's name is synonymous with the spirit of French music, and he made a significant contribution to the rise of modern French music, predating Debussy and Ravel.
Despite demonstrating musical talent from an early age, he studied law at his father's insistence. He joined the Ministry of Interior in 1862 and worked there until 1880. Thereafter, he devoted himself entirely to music. Although he considered himself an ardent Wagnerian, he sought to establish his own compositional style in order to break free from that influence. While he also left behind large-scale masterpieces such as the operetta L'étoile (1877) and the orchestral work España (1883), his piano works are most suitable for an accessible introduction to Chabrier's music.
