A Polish-born composer who was active in Germany. He was also involved in music as a pianist and educator. After studying at the New Academy of Music and the Sing-Akademie in Berlin, he taught music at the latter. Upon completing his military service, he toured and performed across Europe, America, and Canada. In 1877, the year he married, he premiered his own piano concerto, composed the previous year, and gained popularity. In 1881, he founded a conservatory in Berlin, and ten years later, he opened a branch school in New York. The Berlin conservatory later merged with Carl Klindworth's conservatory, but the collaboration was unsuccessful, leading to Klindworth's withdrawal. In the 20th century, he was involved in the founding of the German Music Teachers' Association and the German Performers' Association, and in his later years, he opened another music school in Berlin.
As a pianist, Scharwenka was known as a 'Chopin player'. He also authored Methodik des Klavierspiels (Leipzig, 1907).
