Dutch composer, organist, and teacher. He is the most important composer of the Netherlands School. His father, Pieter Swybertszoon, was the organist of the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam, and Sweelinck and his son also succeeded to the position of organist. His grandfather and uncle were also organists, making it a musical family. Notably, "Sweelinck" is his mother's surname.
He studied composition and organ in Amsterdam and became the organist of the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam. He excelled in improvising on the organ and harpsichord, earning him the title "Orpheus of Amsterdam." As an educator, he trained numerous talented musicians, including Samuel Scheidt, Heinrich Scheidemann, and Jacob Praetorius.
His extant works include 254 vocal pieces and approximately 70 keyboard pieces.
