Born in Tokyo in 1958. He began piano at age 4, studying under Nobuko Amada. From 1964 to 1970, he studied at the Toho Gakuen School of Music for Children. From 1974, he studied under Michio Kitazume, Katsuto Uchida, and Akio Yashiro in preparation for the Tokyo University of the Arts (Geidai) entrance examination. He graduated from the Tokyo University of the Arts Graduate School in 1984, having studied under Teruyuki Noda and Akira Miyoshi. In 1980, he won first prize at the 49th Japan Music Competition, and in 1982, he received the 5th Japan Symphony Foundation Composition Award. In 1985, he co-founded "Art Respirant" with young performers and composers, and has since been involved in its planning and management as a representative. As a member of Art Respirant, he received the 12th Kenzo Nakajima Music Award. In 1999, he premiered "Polyphonia for Viola and Orchestra" at "Orchestra Project '99" and received the Heisei 11 (1999) Arts Festival Excellence Award. He has received commissions from various organizations such as the Min-On Contemporary Music Festival, NHK, Nippon Steel Culture Foundation, Kita Ward Culture Promotion Foundation, Toyama City Cultural Projects Association, and the 5th Japan International Competition (for required pieces), as well as from performers and ensembles including Mazumi Tanamura, Mayuko Kamio, Fine Duo, and Shin-ichi Ueno & Phonix Reflection. In 2024, he premiered "Stella Binaria," a commissioned work for International Music Festival NIPPON 2024 (Artistic Director: Akiko Suwanai), in Nagoya and Tokyo. In 2025, he composed "Novella Capricciosa," a commissioned required piece for Viola Space 2025 "The 6th Tokyo International Viola Competition," which will be performed by second-round contestants in May.
While continuing diverse compositional activities, he also focuses on conducting, performing contemporary works both domestic and international, and conducting numerous world premieres of new works at events such as the Asia Music Festival, ISCM World Music Days Yokohama, Japan Contemporary Music Association, and the final rounds of the Japan Music Competition's composition division. In November 2024, he conducted the premiere of the completed version by Natsuka Kojima of Klaus Pringsheim's "Yamada Nagamasa" (1939) for soloists, chorus, and orchestra, as part of "Geidai Project 2024." In July 2016, he was invited to the Beijing International Composition Workshop (Central Conservatory of Music, Beijing), where he gave lessons and lectures, and his works were performed. In November 2018, at the New National Theatre's "Dance Archive in Japan 2018," "August Garden" (premiered in 1994), choreographed and composed by Yutaka Shoji (1928-2008) based on "Concertante Metamorphosis for Violin, Cello, and Orchestra," was restaged.
Additionally, he serves as a judge for various composition competitions, both domestic and international, including the Japan Music Competition.
After serving as a professor at Toho Gakuen University, he held positions as professor, trustee, and vice president at Tokyo University of the Arts. He is currently Professor Emeritus at Tokyo University of the Arts.
