Czech composer. His German name was Friedrich Smetana. He is known as Bohemia's first great national composer. He was born as the eleventh child of František Smetana, a brewer and amateur violinist. During his gymnasium (high school) years, he moved to Prague and Liszt's performances. From 1856, he worked as a piano teacher in Sweden, and after returning home in 1861, he began composing Czech-language operas, including "The Bartered Bride" and "Libuše." In 1874, while composing the cycle of symphonic poems "Má Vlast" (My Homeland), he complained of ill health and gradually lost his hearing, but continued to compose until his death in a mental hospital in 1884.
